A civil and common law lawyer, U.S./German dual licensed, Mr. Gusy combines experience as an arbitration, litigation and corporate attorney.

Mr. Gusy advises on how best to structure complex investment projects including mergers, acquisitions and private equity, the formation and maintenance of U.S. and German companies and on how to obtain maximum international law protection. On the contentious side, Mr. Gusy frequently litigates in U.S. courts and has been involved in more than 30 international arbitrations (AAA/ICDR, ICC, ICSID, LCIA, DIS, VIAC, UNCITRAL, international and domestic ad hoc) held in English, German, French and Spanish both as counsel and as arbitrator. On behalf of multinational investors he obtained two of the five largest ICSID awards ($172 million and $140 million for Sempra Energy and Enron). Subject matters range from mergers & acquisitions, share and asset purchase agreements, joint ventures, oil & gas and energy disputes, to foreign direct investment, construction, engineering and mining projects.

Mr. Gusy started his legal work with Clifford Chance in Frankfurt, Germany in January 2000. Mr. Gusy also worked in Shearman & Sterling and King & Spalding’s international arbitration groups in Paris, France and Houston, Texas as well as in a Wall Street firm in New York. Subsequently, Mr Gusy started his own firm, Gusy van der Zandt, and became counsel to Hill Smith in the New York office.
